On March 12, DePaul’s Infant Empowerment Education Program (DIEEP) hosted an interactive and informative event to promote breastfeeding, food insecurity, and awareness about maternal mental health, titled Nourishing HERstory: Nutrition, Women & History Dialogue. This event featured a discussion panel between five influential women: Dr. April Johnson-Dumas, Dr. Takesha Charles-Davis, Dr. Tyra T. Gross, Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell, and Dr. Victoria Williams. This event took place at Salon22 in New Orleans, and Best-Selling author LaVerne Toombs led the discussion panel. The panelists discussed their experiences with parenthood and caring for maternal health patients. Over 75 women of all ages from the local community attended, and all were deeply engaged in the discussion. This amazing event also recognized the hard work and determination of several key women who attended and highlighted their significant accomplishments regarding maternal health.
Prioritizing maternal health is important for the overall well-being of both mothers and infants, as this can have profound effects on both individuals throughout their lives. The DePaul Infant Empowerment and Education Program (DIEEP) has an important role in educating local communities about the benefits of breastfeeding, promoting awareness of postpartum depression and its key warning signs, and providing local communities with awareness of resources regarding maternal mental health support. DIEEP regularly hosts events such as this to ensure we are reaching as many community members as possible regarding our initiatives.
