Empowered Nutrition: Supporting Families through The Women, Infant, and Children Program (WIC) - DePaul Infant Empowerment and Education Program (DIEEP)
March is recognized as National Nutrition Month, a time to celebrate the power of good nutrition. Understanding the influential role of nutrition is not just essential, it's empowering. It's the key to a long and healthy life, boosting our energy levels, strengthening our immune systems, and enhancing our overall well-being. The benefits of developing good nutritional habits are truly inspiring:

Weight management: Consuming well-balanced meals is crucial in maintaining a healthy weight and preventing obesity-related diseases, as these meals can help you feel satisfied for extended periods.

Mental health: Specific nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and antioxidants can help reduce brain inflammation, which is associated with anxiety and depression. Ensuring adequate nutrient intake has been shown to boost the production of dopamine and serotonin, which influence mood. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in various types of fish, chia seeds, and walnuts. Magnesium and antioxidants are present in leafy greens, berries, beans, seeds, and numerous other foods.

Digestive health: Diets that include fiber-rich foods support bowel function and help prevent constipation and other digestive problems.

Chronic disease prevention: Adopting healthier eating habits and consistently maintaining these changes can significantly lower the risk of developing heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Quicker recovery from injury or illness: Adequate nutrition supports the immune system, which can also speed up recovery from injuries and illnesses. Specific vitamins can help the immune system combat infections.

Conversely, making poor choices about the foods we eat can negatively affect one’s health in the long run, including the following:

Lower Energy Levels/Fatigue: Without proper nutrition, the body has difficulty maintaining energy levels, resulting in chronic fatigue and significant changes in activity levels.

Weaker Immune System: A diet lacking sufficient nutrients can affect one’s immune system, increasing the body’s vulnerability to illnesses and infections. This may also lead to longer recovery times for those facing diseases or injuries.

Compromised growth and development: Poor nutrition, particularly in children, can result in developmental delays and may affect their academic success.

While poor nutrition can significantly affect everyone’s lives, its impact can be even more harmful to the health of women and children. Food insecurity often exacerbates these issues, which limits access to vital foods for a healthy, balanced diet. The WIC program is crucial for alleviating and preventing food insecurity, particularly in low-income families. Families can make healthier dietary choices despite financial difficulties by enabling women facing socioeconomic challenges to purchase nutrient-rich foods for themselves and their babies or young children. This helps ensure that children receive a healthy start early in life and educates mothers about the importance of adopting better lifestyle habits, as access to foods rich in essential nutrients is also associated with a reduction in preterm births and low birth weight.

Like WIC, the DIEEP is a champion of nutrition, particularly for mothers and their babies. However, it stands out with its focus on promoting breastfeeding. By providing support and education within local communities, DIEEP is instrumental in improving breastfeeding rates among populations with lower-than-average statistics. This emphasis on breastfeeding not only helps babies reach developmental milestones but also supports mothers' physical postpartum recovery. Both DIEEP and WIC are aligned in their mission to promote the initiatives of National Nutrition Month, empowering communities to become healthier through education, outreach, and connecting the public to valuable resources for a better future.
